KimCor's industrial products division, Supermix Bricks and Supermix Cement, are close to the Company's new operational headquarters in Kimberley, South Africa. Supermix began business in 1989 as an alluvial diamond miner which utilised the generated sand and stone to operate a mobile 'ready-mix' concrete batching plant. To this was then added a brick manufacturing facility.
The Company owns 70% of the industrial products division, with Kolong, one of KimCor's Economic Empowerment (BEE) partners, holding the other 30%.
Supermix, which has BEE-preferred status, supplies paving and building bricks and blocks, as well as ready-mixed concrete, to the construction industry in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The facility produces up to 2.0 million bricks per month or 1.80 million paving stones, as well as 3,000m3 of concrete each month.
The recently commissioned stone crushing facility at the Company's Nooitgedacht alluvial diamond mining project, supplies coarse aggregate to Supermix. This sustainable operation allows the Company to supply low cost aggregate to Supermix, whilst simultaneously covering a large proportion of the diamond mining operational costs.
Growth prospects for Supermix are excellent, particularly since the operation was recently awarded a long-term agreement to supply concrete to the South African government for the construction of local infrastructure development. Further, the local market for brick and concrete products is expanding in light of preparations for the soccer world cup, one heat of which will be played in Kimberley.
KimCor will commit funds to the industrial division principally to purchase delivery vehicles for the brick and paving finished products and to provide for some necessary replacement of old equipment.
KimCor believes that rather than being a distraction from the core business, the industrial division provides excellent synergy with the nearby alluvial diamond mining operations and a source of cash flow, part of which can be diverted to fund future expansion of the mining operations.
